Huerto Casero / Home Garden

I can finally cross out "Start a home garden" from my 2010 resolutions list. I've been wanting to do this with my sons for a long time. While I don't have much experience in planting, my mom has a beautiful garden. Maybe I inherited her "green thumb." I hope so.

We are going to start by planting a few seeds in plastic containers. If we are successful, then we can plow up the back yard---Just kidding.

Comencemos/Let's Get Started

First, we made a list of things we needed, which included seeds, planting container, watering can, potting soil, signs.

1. Semillas/Seeds:
The boys collected three types of seeds from their grandmothers own gardens. Two are sweet peppers ---red and green---and the third is lemon tree.

Each of the boys had a trowel so that they could prepare their own containers.

I chose to use purchased potting soil so that no other seeds would be in the soil.

My boys love the watering can. It just added more fun to the project.

We decided to use signs to identify the seeds in container. Seed names on masking tape could have been used to label the planting containers.

I chose to use a recycled containers instead of purchased ones. In the future I will explain how to turn soda plastic bottles into homemade planters.

A Sembrar / Let the Planting Begin

1. Comenzamos echándole tierra a los tiestos. Los llenamos a la mitad.
We started by filling the plant containers about half full with potting soil.

This is such a great project for kids of different ages. There was no time restraints. My younger son could go as slow as he wished as well as not be overly concerned about spilling---we did our planting outdoors.

Once the first layer of soil was in the containers, the soil was moistened with water.

Seeds were then sprinkled over the moistened soil surface.

The seeds were then covered with about 1 to 2 inches of potting soil.

The top layer of soil was moistened with water and the sign for the type of seeds planted in the container was stuck in the soil.
