“Manaña vienen los Reyes! Hay que recogerle pasto a los camellos!” Así celebramos la Víspera del Día de los Tres Reyes Magos en casa y en todo Puerto Rico. Así mismo lo celebrábamos en mis tiempos. La tradición sigue siendo la misma. “The Kings are coming tomorrow! We need to cut grass for the camels!” This is how we celebrated the Eve of Three Kings Day at home. Back in the days, I remember doing the same. I guess traditions haven’t changed one bit.
Recogiendo el pasto… La noche antes del Día de Reyes, los niños recogen pasto para alimentar a los camellos. ¿Qué camellos? Los de los Tres Reyes Magos. El pasto se coloca en una cajita junto con un poco de agua para beber. Tal vez a los camellos le den un poco de sed luego de comer tanto pasto---¿no creen? Cutting the grass… The night before The Three Kings Day, children cut grass for the camels to eat. What camels? The Three Kings’. The grass is put inside a shoebox with some water to drink. Maybe the camels get thirsty after eating so much grass---don’t you think?
Camellos o Caballos?… Existe otra versión que dice que los Reyes Magos reparten sus regalos a caballo ya que en Puerto Rico no hay camellos. Este libro que leí a los nenes ese día habla sobre esto también.
Camels or Horses?… There is another version that says the Wise Men deliver the gifts on horses as there are no camels in Puerto Rico. This book I read that day to my boys explains it very well.
Poniendo la cajita… Por último, los niños ponen la cajita debajo de sus camas. No olviden limpiar un poco allá debajo de la cama. No vayan a terminar con alergia. Esta foto es de la Víspera de Reyes 2010 cuando Ym apenas estaba aprendiendo sobre los Reyes Magos. Placing the box… And last, but not least, the children place the box under their beds. Recibiendo los regalos… En la mañana del 6 de enero los niños corren a buscar sus regalos debajo de sus camas --- unos regalos que aparecen sin envolver en papel de regalo. En esta foto del 2008 podrán ver a Yn y Ym, de 5 y 1 años, buscando regalos--- debajo de la cuna---!

Feliz Día de Reyes! Los Tres Reyes Magos vinieron de Oriente para adorar al Niñito Jesús. Pero recuerden que en Puerto Rico vinieron a caballo, tal como lo muestra esta foto. {Este post lo dedico al artista que talló estos hermosos Reyes Magos, bisabuelo Antolín. Siempre te recordamos abuelito!} Happy Three Kings Day! The Three Wise Men came from the east to adore Baby Jesus. But remember, in Puerto Rico they came on horses as seen on this picture. {I dedicate this post to the artist who made these beautiful Wise Men, great grandfather Antolin.
