ORUGA de mascota / Our pet CATERPILLAR

Encontramos esta oruga en casa e inmediatamente la hicimos parte de la familia. Queríamos ver el ciclo de vida de la mariposa. Pero luego de estar con nosotros durante 4 días, Oto se escapó y pasó a mejor vida :(
*We found this caterpillar at home and we immediately made it part of the family. We wanted to observe the lifecycle of the butterfly. However, Otto escaped after being 4 days with us and, well, let's say he's at a better place now

El corto tiempo que la tuvimos :( aprendimos mucho y los nenes estuvieron observando, alimentándola e investigando sobre ella. Fue un proceso de aprendizaje para todos en la familia!
*Although Otto wasn't long enough with us :( we sure learned a great deal. The kids spend their days observing and feeding Otto, and investigating about caterpillars and butterflies. It became a learning adventure for the whole family!

Esta fue la casita que le hicimos gracias a la ayuda de Janice VanCleave. Cada vez que nos enredabamos ella nos desenredaba. GRACIAS Janice por tu disponibilidad y amabilidad!

Aquí Oto ya transformándose en ESTO. Una de las 1ras cosas que hicimos fue identificar el tipo de oruga que teníamos. Visitamos ESTE SITIO enviado por Janice.
*This is Otto already changing into THIS. One of the 1st things we did was identify the type of caterpillar we had. We visited THIS SITE sent by Janice.







Oto moviéndose por todos lados en su casita. Debido a que se iba a convertir en una Alevilla o Mariposa Nocturna, era por las noches cuando se movía más.
(Saben cómo sabíamos si Oto se estaba alimentando? Por las bolas grandotas de heces fecales, jejeje.)
*Otto moving all over the house especially at night time as it was transforming into a Moth. (Want to know how we found out the hungry Otto was eating? By the huge balls of feces, hehehe.)













Esta fué la 1ra casita de oruga que hicimos… hermosa PERO NO nos funcionó!
Es de vital importancia identificar el tipo de hoja que come la oruga ya que son bien selectivas y no comen todo tipo de hoja. Hasta se pueden morir de hambre!
*This was the 1st butterfly house we built..
pretty BUT it DIDN'T work out for us!
It's extremely important to identify the type of leaves the caterpillar prefers as they are very picky eaters and would starve to death!

Descansa en Paz Oto! *Rest in Peace Otto!

Museo de Insectos / Insects Museum

En agosto visitamos el Museo de Entomología {Insectos} localizado en el Jardín Botánico de Río Piedras. Este estudio surgió de una caminata que dimos para apreciar la Naturaleza donde los chicos me expresaron su interés por los insectos. Otro día les cuento sobre esto. Fue una gira muy interesante excepto por el olor fuerte que había en el museo.

*On August, we visited the Insects Museum located at Rio Piedras' Botanical Garden. After having a nice Nature Walk with the kids, they expressed to me their interest in studying insects. I'll tell you more about this walk in the future. I have to say this was a very interesting trip except for the strong odor inside the museum.

Estudio del PEZ/FISH Study (Parte I/Part I)

Quisiera compartir con ustedes la presentación que le dí a Yn de la nomenclatura del Pez y todas las demás cositas que añadimos como parte del estudio. Como verán, Ym también participó pero sin presionarlo mucho y a su propio nivel. Nosotros lo "seguimos" a él.

***This is the presentation of the Fish nomenclature and other things we did to compliment our study. Although the presentation was intended to be for my oldest kid, Ym also decided to take part. So, he was integrated as much as he would allow to. We actually "followed" him.

Comenzamos nuestro Estudio del Pez observando peces reales en estanques.

Un estanque en el Parque Central de Bayamón, y el otro, en Palmas de Mar en Humacao.

***We began our Fish Study by watching real life fishes we found in ponds.

One pond located at Bayamón and the other at Humacao, Puerto Rico.

Y este amiguito se quería comer nuestros peces...
***And this little friend wanted to eat our fishes...

Luego, presenté la nomenclatura del Pez a Yn donde discutimos las partes del pez y la definición o function de cada parte.

***Then, I presented the Fish Nomenclature to Yn in which we discussed the parts of the fish and the definition of each part, or it's function.

Este es un rompecabezas 3D del Pez que nos regalaron. Al principio parecía fácil pero a Yn le tomó un ratito descubrir su ensamblaje. Aún Ym lo está trabajando.

***This is a Fish 3D puzzle we got as a gift. It looked easy in the beginning but it took Yn a while to figure it out. Ym is still working on it.

Y este es el fabuloso mural que hizo Yn para cada parte del Pez. Le falta escribir la descripción pero quiero que lo haga cuando lo haya aprendido bién. Todavía está trabajando la nomenclatura. El mural es más largo, sólo le tomé fotos a una parte.
***And this is the fabulous chart Yn made for the Fish and it's parts. He needs to write the description but I want him to do this when he learns them all. He's still matching and reading the nomenclature. The chart is longer than this, I only took a picture of part of it.

Tengo otras cositas para publicar pero "mi amigo" blogger no esta cooperando conmigo. ;) Esperen una 2da parte pronto...

La instruccion era tomar fotos de organismos Vivientes y No-Vivientes de su vecindario.

Desde muy pequeño Yn ha mostrado interés por la fotografía. Por eso disfrutó mucho la actividad!

These are Living and Non-Living pictures Yn took as an extension of his Science class. He was asked to find living and non-living things in his neighborhood and take pictures.

Yn has had this passion about photography since he was a little. He really enjoyed the activity!
